Read the local list first
Food-waste services vary between British council areas. Check the current local instructions for accepted materials, liners, collection arrangements and missed collections. Do not copy a neighbouring council’s system or assume a package labelled compostable is accepted in your particular service.
Place the container where the task happens
Choose a manageable kitchen container near food preparation, with a practical cleaning routine. Keep instructions brief and visible for everyone in the household. A system that requires walking through several rooms for each small item is less likely to be used consistently.
Separate prevention from collection
A fuller food-waste container is not the goal. Note what is being discarded, especially unopened products or repeated leftovers. Use that information to change purchasing and portion sizes while continuing to sort unavoidable scraps correctly.
Review the handover to collection
Check how the outdoor container is stored and presented, and follow local instructions rather than improvising. Update the household note when the council changes its service. If you also compost at home, make the distinction between the two routes clear so unsuitable material does not enter the garden bin.
