Choose a question you can answer
Start with a specific aim, such as understanding the water used for patio pots. In Ireland, not every household has the same access to consumption information, so use the measurement method available to you. A labelled watering can and a simple log can still provide useful evidence.
Measure a normal week
Record the number of fills, approximate volume, weather and which plants were watered. Include water discarded while flushing a hose or dealing with a leak. If using a household meter, remember that indoor consumption may also change during the same period.
Separate waste from plant demand
Look for leaking fittings, repeated runoff and watering that continues despite wet growing medium. Address these before cutting water to plants that need it. Changing one part of the routine at a time makes the result easier to interpret.
Compare fairly
A wet week and a hot, windy week are not a controlled comparison. Keep the conditions alongside the totals and repeat observations. Use Uisce Éireann’s conservation guidance for further practical ideas. The aim is a better routine, not a single impressive percentage without a clear baseline.
