Keep a useful condensation record in an Irish home

Record moisture patterns, room conditions and possible leaks before deciding how to tackle recurring condensation in an Irish house or flat.

Describe the pattern accurately

Note where moisture appears, at what time and after which activities. In an Irish home, window condensation, a roof leak and penetrating damp are different possibilities. Photographs taken from the same position can help show whether a patch is changing rather than relying on memory.

Use readings as context

A room thermometer and humidity meter can add useful information, but a single reading does not diagnose the building. Record the room and location of the instrument. Surfaces may behave differently from the air in the middle of the room, especially around colder corners.

Check the ordinary moisture routine

Review cooking, bathing and laundry drying alongside the operation of extraction and background ventilation. Keep required vents unobstructed. SEAI’s ventilation guidance can help you prepare questions about the system in an Irish property; it does not replace investigation of a leak.

Act on recurring problems

Share a concise record with the landlord or an appropriate building professional when damp persists. Avoid repeatedly painting over a patch before the cause is understood. If there is extensive mould or a health concern, seek suitable advice and address the exposure as well as the building defect.
