Find your household electricity baseline before buying new equipment

Use comparable meter readings and an appliance list to investigate regular electricity demand in a UK or Irish household.

Define the baseline you want to understand

The electricity used when little seems to be happening can include refrigeration, network equipment, heating controls and other necessary loads. In a UK or Irish home, start by listing what is normally running. Do not assume the entire overnight reading represents waste.

Collect comparable observations

Read the meter or available usage display at consistent times and note major activities. Check whether the display shows power or energy; the units answer different questions. Keep a separate note for electric heating, hot water or vehicle charging that may operate automatically.

Investigate safely and methodically

Review settings and manufacturer guidance before switching anything off. Do not interrupt medical equipment, essential ventilation, refrigeration or safety systems for an experiment. For suitable plug-in appliances, a correctly rated energy monitor can help when used according to its instructions.

Use the result to choose one action

An avoidable schedule, an unused device or a failing appliance may justify further attention. Compare like-for-like days after a change rather than claiming a saving from one quiet evening. The useful outcome is a measured decision; a new gadget should solve an identified problem rather than merely add another load.
